#2) Couples dedicate quality time to the relationship.

I’ve noticed that by the time a couple comes to me for couple therapy, they have stopped spending time on the relationship.  Of course, couples don’t talk for very good reasons … and by not spending time on the relationship this can be a way to avoid the not talking.

Living together is not spending time on the relationship.

Learning what the relationship needs (as if it were a third-partner) is a good start:-

  • Couples set a “date” night once a week or once a month – and plan around it (no excuses).
  • Couples set a regular ‘relationship meeting’ where relationship matters are discussed.
  • Couples keep a “relationship diary” where the couple can log what relationship matters need to be discussed.

Sometimes a relationship-in-conflict needs some tender care paying to it, nursing it back into health.
